Update: Matthew Kelly writes: "Having received error messages that fonts are damaged when trying to open them in ATM Deluxe 4.03, I found that regenerating the font with Fontographer fixes the problem. The person I spoke to said that Mac OS 8.5 or later is far more sensitive to problems with fonts that were created pre-1991, and that a simple and cheap solution is to replace the older bitmaps with versions from Type On Call 4.0 or higher. In effect, Mac OS 8.6 can corrupt an otherwise healthy font. The problem is that 11 of the 14 fields aren't initialized, and depending on the random garbage in these fields, may lead to crashes. (The calculation for the FOND's ID is the bits 7 to 14 of the FONT's ID.) By itself, this is not a problem. For these fonts, QuickDraw in 8.6 will create FONDs if there is not a FOND with the correct ID mapping to a given FONT. "The problem occurs only with older fonts with FONT resources. Font Reserve) believe that at least some of the reported font-related problems in Mac OS 8.6 (see previous item) may be due to a "serious bug in Mac OS 8.6."
